March 18, 2025— The first clinical trial of Sildenafil for the treatment of erectile dysfunction has found that men who take the drug for erectile dysfunction are at a higher risk of developing heart attacks and strokes than men who don't take it.
The study, a double-blind, parallel-design study, involved more than 120 men with erectile dysfunction who took one of the most commonly prescribed Sildenafil-containing drugs, tadalafil. The men also took the drug for erectile dysfunction in combination with a nitrate-based drug, for example, Viagra Connect. The men who took sildenafil were found to have an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and hospitalizations.
The researchers found that the men who took the drug were less likely to develop heart attacks or strokes than those who didn't take the drug. The findings were based on a small trial of more than 300 men who were treated with the drug for erectile dysfunction.
"As a matter of fact, the results of our study suggest that patients taking Sildenafil for erectile dysfunction have a greater risk of developing heart attacks and strokes," said Dr. Joseph Leven, chairman of cardiology and chief of cardiology at the Mayo Clinic.
